Night Reds - C

1983.10

Born in Poland in 1921, Gershon Iskowitz was a survivor of the Holocaust. Iskowitz studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1945-1948 with Oscar Kokoschka. In 1949, Iskowitz moved to Canada, where he drew and painted painful, psychologically intense wartime images. After 1950, Iskowitz began painting Canadian landscapes in Ontario. Receiving a grant that enabled Iskowitz to travel Canada to see a variety of landscapes inspired a more colourful, abstract style. At the 1972 Venice Biennale, Iskowitz represented Canada. In 1984, Iskowitz established an annual art prize for young artists, which is one of the most important visual arts awards in Canada.
