Gerald Roach studied at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, graduating in 1964. From then he went to work for the Louisbourg Restoration Programme until 1969. After that experience, Roach moved to Montreal and took the position as the Professor of Administration, Drawing and Painting, at Dawson College in Montreal from 1974-1980. Roach then left Montreal to return to Cape Breton where he isolated himself in the highlands surrounded by nature, to paint very often.
