Charlie Murphy was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia. In 1969 he graduated from St. Fx University, Antigonish and trained as a biologist and physical education teacher. A self taught photographer, he first received recognition in 1976 working with his mentors Robert Frank and June Leaf in Mabou. Around this time he began to integrate collage within his artwork, a technique that he later discovered had affinities with the work of Kurt Schwitters and Robert Rauschenberg. He developed his composite works in many directions, combining text, painting and photography.
