Mary Pudlat was born and grew up in the traditional Inuit hunting lifestyle near Povunituk, Northern Quebec. Mary was orphaned as a teen, and she went to live with her brother in Ivujivik before moving to Baffin Island in the 1940s. From there Mary moved to Cape Dorset in 1963 with her husband and children. In Cape Dorset, Mary took part in the new West Baffin Eskimo Co-op fine arts program and explored her talents for sculpting soapstone and drawing. Mary created mostly animals, but also made people doing traditional activities.
