Le Lac

1994.04

This Paris-born painter immigrated to Montreal in 1966, at the age of 18. Over the next seven years, Deberdt travelled across North America to experience the land as much as possible, supporting himself by doing odd jobs like selling encyclopedias. Deberdts art training from Paris included printing and graphic arts, but it was not until the 1970s that he explored painting and took it as his main medium. Deberdt took a lot of influence from the Group of Seven, especially Lawrence Harris. Deberdt reduces the elements in his work down to their purest form, creating a style described as “hyper-realism”. He began showing his work professionally in Montreal in 1975, and now his work is represented across Canada, Europe, and the United States.
