Born in Chicago, McLennan studied at Chicago School of Art and Design. She then moved to Cape Breton with her husband in 1884 when he started at the Sydney Steel Plant. L. B. McLennan became an established watercolour painter and painted the local scenery around her house on Petersfield Estate in Point Edward.
