A less well-known side of K. McLennan was her creative
side. Photography, particularly nature photography, was
important to her as a hobby; and she did her own
bookbinding as well, having learned the craft in Paris. K.
McLennan also studied painting in Paris under Percyval
Tudor-Hart, at the same time as her mother, in 1909-10.
A lady of multiple interests and achievements, K. McLennan
never attended any school or university. A bad case of
diphtheria as a child rendered her too delicate to be sent to
school, so her parents arranged for her to have a
succession of tutors and governesses. One of these
governesses was Hetty Kimber, who along with K.
McLennan’s mother might have sparked the young girl’s
desire to paint.
