Jovette Marchessault is a playwright, novelist, painter, and sculptor, who lived from 1938 to 2012. Marchessault was self-taught, and often her works were related to women of various backgrounds. Her art gained a lot of attention for its radical feminism. At age 13, Marchessault was forced to leave school and work in a factory; but she continued to educate herself by reading. Marchessault left Quebec in the late 1950's to travel through the Americas for the purpose of self-discovery.
