Alex Colville was born in 1920 in Toronto, and moved to Amherst, Nova Scotia when he was 9 years old. Colville attended Mount Allison University and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1942. From 1942 to 1944, Colville served in the Canadian Army and was sent overseas as a war artist stationed in northern Europe and the Mediterranean. After the war, Colville took a teaching position at Mount Allison where he remained until 1963, when he resigned to devote his time to his art. In 1965, Colville was commissioned by the Government of Canada to design coins celebrating the centennial year of Canada. Colville was names an officer of the Order of Canada in 1967 and a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1982. Colville and his wife lived in Nova Scotia until he passed away in 2013.
