Autumn, Casson Lake

2000.14.01

Born in 1898, in Toronto, Canada, A. J. Casson studied art at Ryerson College. During the year 1925, Casson worked under Franklin Carmichael as a design apprentice and helped organize the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. The next year Casson was invited to join the Group of Seven. Besides painting landscapes of northern Ontario, Casson painted the pastoral, pioneering southern Ontario that has now vanished from the modern world. Casson Lake, southwest of Espanola, was named in his honour in 1974. His works are in most Canadian Institutions including the National Gallery and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
